Week six around the league wasn’t the most exciting based on the final scores of the games.
Only 5 of the 14 games finished as a one-score game this week.
I want to start off by diving into the New York Jets and the chaotic past few weeks that they’ve had. It all started in week 5 when New York lost to the Minnesota Vikings in London dropping their record to 2-3.
The Jets owner Woody Allen worked in the past as the NFL’s ambassador for London. It’s been speculated that he felt embarrassed by his team losing in the place where he used to work so he felt a change needed to be made.
Upon returning home from London news broke that New York fired their head coach Robert Salah. The move came as a surprise to many so early in the season, not even the players were informed of the decision.
On Monday night the Jets played their first game without their old head coach and actually played well. Still, they came up short losing to Buffalo 23-20 dropping their record to 2-4 now.
The morning after the loss on Monday it was reported that New York had traded for star receiver Davonte Adams. While on paper this seems like a good move to get the offense flowing better they still have alarming issues on the offensive line.
Aaron Rodgers has been getting beat up every game and unless they do something to change that then it’s difficult for me to see them make any kind of playoff run at all. Owner Woody Allen said the Jets are now “all in” on the rest of the season. We’ll see how that works out for them.
In other news, it was announced Tuesday that Russell Wilson will now be the starting quarterback for the Steelers. I discussed a few weeks ago how if Justin Fields plays well enough then we might not ever see Wilson play.
In my opinion, Fields has definitely played up to the standards to keep the starting role but got benched anyway and I disagree with the decision. Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record while throwing 10 touchdowns to only 1 interception.
Pittsburgh is currently tied for first in their division and making a quarterback back change now seems like a weird time. Still, who knows maybe this move will be beneficial for the Steelers in the long run. I’m interested to see how this plays out for the rest of the year.
Next, I want to take some time to talk about the dumpster fire that is the Dallas Cowboys. They are coming off an embarrassing 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions. This is the Cowboy’s worst loss at home since 1989. This comes just two weeks after they lost 44-19 to the Saints at home.
Dallas’ roster as a whole has many holes and I simply don’t believe this team is built to win. It’s hard to blame the players in this situation, it feels like more of the blame should be falling on the owner Jerry Jones’ shoulders. On top of being the owner, Jones is also the general manager of the team.
For the last few years, Jones has been taking a lot of criticism for failing to make any major moves in the offseason. Jerry’s way of running an organization is starting to feel outdated and the players are the ones paying the price.
Is their season over already? I think so, and I’m not saying they’re going to be terrible but their schedule is brutal down the stretch and it’s going to take a lot of work to get back on track.
Cowboys fans’ expectations the past few seasons have been to make it past the divisional round in the playoffs. Their roster is just not good enough to make that happen this year. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they miss the playoffs altogether.
In my opinion, the best way to help the franchise is to change ownership but I seriously doubt that will happen anytime soon. We could see a fire sale coming this offseason for the Dallas Cowboys.
Lastly, let’s get to the upcoming game of the week. The Detroit Lions coming off that major win travel to Minnesota to play the unbeaten Vikings. The first meeting between these division rivals this season.
The Vikings are well rested coming off a bye and the Lions seem to be hitting their stride as a team. Minnesota’s defense has been one of the best in the league but they get their biggest test this Sunday against Detroit’s high-powered offense. This game is a real toss-up for me.
The books have Minnesota as two-and-a-half-point favorites for the game. This week I’m going against them as I believe the Lions finally hand Minnesota their first loss of the season. It’s simply too hard for me to bet against Detroit with the way they have been playing lately.
I don’t get paid to make decisions or have opinions but it’s always fun to take a deeper dive into the best stories of the week.
