Week 4

Not the most eventful week around the league but still plenty of things to dive into.

On Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills were handed their first losses of the season. Tough losses for both teams but it was only a matter of time before one of them fell into the loss column.

The Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs remain the only two unbeaten teams in the league.

I had the Vikings and Packers as my game of the week and it did not disappoint. Minnesota seemed to be on their way to a blowout win after leading their division rival 28-7 going into the half. The Vikings however let Green Bay storm all the way back to make this a close game. In the end, Minnesota won the game by only two points, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 2016.

Kansas City also improved to 4-0 by defeating a banged-up Chargers team. The Chiefs have been barely scraping by opponents each week but it’s hard for me to say they do not look as good as advertised because they still haven’t lost. I think the one thing that can hurt their chances this season is injuries.

Already this season the Chiefs have lost their starting running back Isiah Pacheco and offseason acquisition Hollywood Brown to major injuries. After last Sunday we can now add receiver Rashee Rice to that list. There is still no word on the severity of Rashee’s injury at this time but he is believed to have suffered a torn ACL.

If that is true then Rice could be out for the rest of the 2024 season and unfortunately, it looks to only get worse for him from this point. This past offseason Rashee was arrested for a criminal hit and run that happened in Dallas, Texas. He was never suspended as there was an ongoing investigation but by the time he returns next season, there could very possibly be a ruling in his case.

If Rice did tear his ACL, and if he is suspended, it could be possibly two seasons before we see him back on the field again.

In other major news, Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams has requested a trade from the team. This comes after two and a half lackluster seasons with Las Vegas where bad quarterback play has hindered Adams’s production.

In my opinion, Davante wants to play somewhere that has a better system and coaching, or in other words, he simply wants to win. I think he will end up somewhere such as the Steelers, Saints, or with his old friend Aaron Rodgers on the Jets.

My biggest loser of the week and maybe the season so far is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before the season Jacksonville’s owner Shahid Khan proclaimed they had the best roster since he took the job and it was time to win.

The Jaguars have started the season 0-4 and are the only winless team through four weeks.

“Star” quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been underwhelming and their defense is currently Swiss cheese ranking in the bottom of the league for most major stats. The Jaguars enter a must-win game against the Colts on Sunday as with a loss their season is as good as gone.

It seems coach Doug Peterson is already living on borrowed time and it could only be a matter of time before he’s out the door.

Last week it was announced that UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka will be leaving the program over an NIL dispute. It was reported that Sluka was verbally promised $100,000 by an assistant coach to transfer to the school. He never received that payment and now he is transferring out.

The NCAA has been a broken system and NIL seems like a cover that will never fully resolve the issue. Schools and athletes should sign contracts with clear terms to protect both parties and to avoid issues like this in the future. It has become almost a “pay to play” system with the top athletes choosing schools based on NIL deals.

I don’t blame them I would want to get paid too.

While on the topic of the NCAA, my game of the week was actually on Saturday. Alabama versus Georgia was possibly the game of the year so far.

The Bulldogs were getting blown out early but almost mounted a major comeback falling just short in the final minutes losing to Alabama 41-34. The second half of this game was electric and it was better than any game I saw on Sunday this week.

I want to quickly shout out Alabama receiver Ryan Williams. He finished the game with six receptions for 177 yards and a touchdown. Williams is only 17 years old and he already looks like one of the best players in the country and will be for years to come.

Lastly, my upcoming game of the week is the Buffalo Bills versus the Houston Texans.

Both teams are coming into the week 3-1 and leading their divisions respectively.

After a tough loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night football the Bills are no longer unbeaten but look to get back on track this week. This game is pretty evenly matched with the books having the Bills as only one-point favorites.

I’ll ride with the books this week and take the Bills moneyline. The Vikings covered our pick last week so hopefully Buffalo can do the same.

I don’t get paid to make decisions or have opinions but it’s always fun to take a deeper dive into the best stories of the week.
